Archaeological findings indicate that the Colchian culture thrived here from the 15th to 13th centuries BC. The must-see attractions of Kutaisi beautifully blend ancient history with modernity.

Situated 120 meters above sea level, Kutaisi is approximately 230 kilometers from Tbilisi. The city’s most captivating sights can be explored in one day.

2. The Colchis Fountain

The Colchis Fountain, a charming addition to Kutaisi’s central square, was inaugurated in 2011. Designed by architect David Gogichaishvili, it has been described by former President Mikheil Saakashvili as the most expensive fountain in Georgia. This captivating structure is adorned with gilded sculptures of various animals, which are enlarged replicas of Bronze Age figurines discovered during archaeological excavations in the area. These original artifacts, dating back to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, can be viewed at the National Museum of Georgia.

The fountain serves as a vibrant symbol of the city, blending its rich historical heritage with modern artistry.

From personal experience: The fountain is located in the center of a roundabout, and no pedestrian is crossing nearby. To get closer, you will need to run across the road. Please be careful!

3. City Theatre

In the same square, near the Colchis Fountain, you will find one of the oldest Georgian dramatic theatres, named after L. Meskhishvili. The first performance at this theatre took place in 1861. The building, designed in the Renaissance style, is adorned with columns, arched windows, and bas-reliefs.

From personal experience: There is a small park next to the theatre and fountain where you can relax in the shade of the trees and connect to free Wi-Fi.

4. White Bridge

The White Bridge was built over the Rioni River in the 19th century and is still considered a historic symbol of Kutaisi and one of the must-see attractions. Recently, the bridge underwent renovations and was enhanced with transparent glass panels that allow visitors to walk over it while observing the rushing waters of the Rioni below.

From personal experience: Be sure to take a photo with the statue of the boy on the railings, and enjoy a stroll through the nearby park with views of the river.

5. Cable Car

⌚️ Hours: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Price: 3 lari one way (buy a round-trip ticket if you plan to come back down)

The cable car station is located in the park near the White Bridge, where you can purchase tickets for a scenic ride. Taking the trip on the old cable road is worth it for the breathtaking views of the river and the city. The ride will take you to a recreation park, where you can enjoy a ride on the old Ferris wheel. From there, it’s just a leisurely 30-minute walk down Kazbegi Street to Bagrati Cathedral, or you can simply descend back into the city.

6. Bagrati Cathedral

Sunday service: 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Bagrati Cathedral is one of the oldest in Georgia, with construction starting back in 1003. While only ruins remained for many years, it was restored about ten years ago; however, it was removed from UNESCO’s World Heritage list due to reconstruction work.

Today, this impressive cathedral stands tall and closely resembles its original form from centuries ago. You can stroll around the grounds and take in the beautiful views of the city and mountains.

From personal experience: Every time I visit Kutaisi, I make sure to hike up to Bagrati Cathedral. The view from there is perfect for watching a stunning sunset, and the whole area feels incredibly peaceful.

7. Kakabadze Art Gallery

Located in the heart of Kutaisi, the Kakabadze Art Gallery is a small but fascinating space that often goes unnoticed by visitors. It’s worth stopping by to see works by some of Georgia’s most celebrated artists. The gallery showcases original paintings by Pirosmani, Varla, and Kakabadze himself. These masterpieces offer a wonderful insight into the Georgian spirit and their deep love for their homeland. For the art lovers, it is just one of the must-see attractions in Kutaisi.

8. Kutaisi Botanical Garden

Nestled on the right bank of the Rioni River, this small botanical garden is a bit off the beaten path from the city center. While it may not be a major tourist attraction, locals love coming here to escape the heat and enjoy leisurely walks. You can wander through beautiful greenery and admire hundreds of species of plants and trees. The highlight of the garden is a tiny chapel tucked inside the trunk of a 400-year-old oak tree, which is easy to find thanks to clear signposts directing visitors there.

9. The Palace of Queen Tamar

The royal residence of Geguti is an important historical site in Georgia, located just 12 kilometers south of Kutaisi. The main structure dates back to the 12th century, although some fragments are even older, dating from the 5th century. Here, you can explore the remnants of the palace, its domes, and churches, and admire the ancient stonework.

10. Motsameta Monastery

Make sure to stop by Motsameta Monastery on your way to Gelati Monastery, as they are conveniently located along the same route. Nestled on a hillside just 3 kilometers from Kutaisi, this monastery is set in a stunning location. It is home to the relics of saints David and Constantine. According to legend, these brothers were thrown into the river from a cliff, causing the water to turn red; that’s why it’s called Tskaltsitela, meaning “red water.” From the monastery, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding mountain gorge.

From personal experience: Be sure to enter the monastery. Near the entrance for visitors, you will find long skirts and headscarves available for use.

11. Gelati Monastery: must-see attraction near Kutaisi

⌚️ Hours: Saturday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM

Gelati Monastery is the most renowned attraction in the vicinity of Kutaisi, located just 5 kilometers away, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This significant temple serves as a testament to Georgia’s ancient culture, uniqueness, and history.

Founded by King David IV of Georgia, known as David the Builder, in 1106, the monastery complex is truly impressive in scale. The main church is adorned with stunning frescoes and mosaics that are considered the finest in the entire South Caucasus. Following extensive restoration efforts, the monastery is now in excellent condition.

In addition to the monastery itself, the complex also includes the remains of an educational academy, fragments of a wine cellar, a bell tower, ancient wine jugs, and much more. King David IV is buried here, beneath a flat stone located right at the monastery’s gates.

From personal experience: On your way to Gelati Monastery, consider stopping for lunch at Chateau, a complex in the nearby village of the same name. Here, you can enjoy Georgian or European dishes while taking in beautiful views of Gelati Church and the river.
