1. How to Get to Akhmeta from Tbilisi

If you’ve been dreaming of walking through green valleys, breathing in fresh air, and listening to birdsong, head to Akhmeta. This Georgian town lies in the Alazani Valley, just 29 km from Telavi. Not many tourists know about it — and that’s part of its charm. In this article, we’ll tell you exactly how to get to Akhmeta.

Here, nature remains untouched: mountains, waterfalls, and crystal-blue lakes. Nearby you’ll find three protected areas — Batsara, Babaneuri, and Tusheti. The region is also rich in cultural landmarks: fortresses, temples, and castles from different eras.

2. How to Get to Akhmeta by Minibus

Traveling to Akhmeta by minibus is the most budget-friendly option — but there’s no direct route. You’ll need to make one transfer in Telavi.

Minibuses to Telavi leave roughly every hour from the Ortachala and Samgori bus stations. No need to book in advance — just pay the driver in cash on the spot. A ticket costs about 10 GEL. You can also catch a minibus from Isani station, but keep in mind that these trips will involve an extra transfer.

Once in Telavi, the easiest way to continue to Akhmeta is by taxi. The ride takes about 30 minutes and costs between 25 and 40 GEL, depending on the company, weather, and fare.

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Frequent departures
  • No advance booking required

Cons:

  • Flexible departure times (buses leave when full)
  • Can be cramped, hot, and noisy (often no AC or internet)
  • No dedicated luggage space
  • Frequent, tiring stops
  • Limited scenery along the route
  • Safety concerns — some drivers tend to speed or brake sharply

Departure times:

  • Ortachala: every 45 minutes from 08:15 to 17:00
  • Samgori: every 40 minutes from 09:30 to 16:45
    (both to Telavi)

Travel time: ~2 hours to Telavi + 30 minutes to Akhmeta
Cost: ~10 GEL (to Telavi) + 25–40 GEL (taxi to Akhmeta)

3. How to Get to Akhmeta by Car

If you’re not just looking for the cheapest way to get to Akhmeta but also want the freedom to explore along the way, renting a car is a great option. The best part? You can pull over whenever something catches your eye (as long as it’s safe and allowed).

For example, take a detour through the charming town of Mtskheta. Climb up to Jvari Monastery for a stunning view of the Aragvi and Kura rivers meeting — one of Georgia’s most iconic sights.

The fastest route from Tbilisi to Akhmeta is via შ43, and without stops, the drive takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes.

A budget-friendly Toyota Prius rental costs around 140–150 GEL per day, but remember to factor in fuel (about 40–60 GEL). Some companies may also require a deposit, a return fee if you drop the car off outside Tbilisi, and a quick wash before returning it.

Pros:

  • Total freedom — no need to follow a bus timetable
  • Comfortable and tailored to your needs
  • Plenty of space for luggage
  • The chance to explore hidden gems along the way

Cons:

  • More expensive than public transport
  • Roads can be tricky for inexperienced drivers
  • You’ll need to plan your route yourself

Travel time: ~2 hours 10 minutes (without stops)
Cost: 140–150 GEL/day + 40–60 GEL for fuel + possible deposit

The quickest way to get from Tbilisi to Akhmeta without transfers is by taxi. Just book a ride through apps like Bolt, or Maxim. A one-way trip usually costs between 75 and 90 GEL, but prices can change depending on the tariff, traffic, and even the weather.

Pro tip: if you’re traveling during rush hour, book in advance — otherwise, you might end up waiting a long time or having your ride canceled last minute. And while it’s tempting to pick the cheapest fare, that often means an unclean cabin and less comfort.

Pros:

  • Direct ride with no transfers
  • More comfortable than public transport (depending on the driver and car)
  • Space for luggage

Cons:

  • Higher cost
  • No control over which driver or car you get
  • Many Georgian taxi drivers have a heavy foot on the gas
  • Extra charges for stops or waiting time

Travel time: ~2 hours 10 minutes (without stops)
Cost: 75–90 GEL
